Reading– In reading this week, we will be Reviewing for the upcoming Reading STAAR. Students will be using the skills they have been learning all year and working on building their reading stamina. This test will take place on Wednesday, April 11, 2011.
Writing– In writing, each class will be working on creative writing. Students will be working on creating adventure stories.
Social Studies– We will be continuing our Unit over the Civil War. Students will be learning about the causes of the Civil War, President Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address, and important traits of leaders. One big thing we are wanting students to notice is that these leadership qualities can be seen in everybody but not all leaders possess these skills. For example, Hitler was a leader of a nation but wasn’t very empathetic or honest. While Abraham Lincoln had both of these qualities.
Math- This week we are in our last unit of math: Converting measurement and financial literacy. In this unit, students will be able to solve problems by calculating conversions within a measurement system, customary or metric. Students will not need to memorize conversion values but will know how to use a chart to convert units. And then we’re talking about money! In financial literacy, students will be able to define income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, and property tax, explain the difference between gross income and net income, describe actions that might be taken to balance a budget when expenses exceed income and balance a simple budget.
Science- Today we wrapped up our unit on food webs and food chains and changes to the environment and this week we will begin our new unit on Structures and Functions; Inherited Traits and Learned Behaviors; Metamorphosis. We will identify organisms’ structures and behaviors that help them survive in their environments. We will look at different examples of animals and plants and see how their structures help them live and survive in a particular environment.
